Aramid Honeycomb Core Selection Guide

A practical guide to selecting aramid honeycomb core based on cell size, density, thickness, cell configuration, material grade, and mechanical performance.

Overview

A practical guide to selecting aramid honeycomb core based on cell size, density, thickness, cell configuration, material grade, and mechanical performance.

Technical Content

Selecting the right aramid honeycomb core requires consideration of the intended application, mechanical performance requirements, weight limitations, and sandwich panel design.

This guide provides practical recommendations for selecting the appropriate cell size, density, core thickness, cell configuration, and material grade.

1. Cell Size Selection

Cell size affects face-sheet support, surface flatness, and manufacturing cost.

Application Requirements Selection Guidelines
Thin face sheets Smaller cells provide more closely spaced support.
High surface flatness requirements Smaller cells help minimize surface dimpling.
Thick or rigid face sheets Larger cells may be suitable.
Cost-sensitive applications Larger cells are generally more economical.

2. Density Selection

Core density influences weight, compressive strength, and shear performance.

Application Requirements Selection Guidelines
Minimum weight Consider lower-density cores.
Higher compressive strength Consider higher-density cores.
Higher shear strength Consider higher-density cores.
Balanced weight and strength Select based on mechanical performance data.

Within the same honeycomb product family, higher density generally provides improved mechanical properties, but also increases weight and material cost.

3. Core Thickness Selection

Core thickness is primarily determined by the overall sandwich panel thickness, required bending stiffness, and structural design.

  • Thinner cores: Suitable for applications with limited overall panel thickness.
  • Thicker cores: Generally improve the bending stiffness of sandwich structures by increasing the separation between the face sheets.

The final core thickness should be selected based on structural loading, allowable deflection, and core shear performance.

4. Cell Configuration Selection

Cell Configuration Recommended Applications
Regular Hexagonal Flat panels and conventional sandwich structures.
Over-expanded Curved panels, cylindrical structures, and other contoured composite components.

Over-expanded honeycomb offers greater formability for certain curved structures, allowing the core to conform more easily to specific shapes and bending directions.

However, its directional mechanical properties differ from those of regular hexagonal honeycomb. The selection should therefore consider both forming requirements and structural loading conditions.

5. Material Grade Selection

Aramid honeycomb cores are available in industrial and aerospace grades.

Material Grade Selection Considerations
Industrial Grade General industrial and commercial composite applications.
Aerospace Grade Applications requiring aerospace-grade raw materials and specific performance requirements.

These grades use different grades of aramid paper, which may vary in thickness, tensile strength, elongation at break, tear strength, and other physical and mechanical properties.

The appropriate material grade should be selected according to the intended application and project specifications.

6. Mechanical Performance Verification

Before finalizing a core specification, the following mechanical properties should be evaluated according to the application requirements:

  • Compressive strength and modulus
  • L-direction and W-direction shear strength
  • L-direction and W-direction shear modulus

The mechanical performance of aramid honeycomb core depends on cell size, density, material grade, and cell configuration.
